Ector County Sheriff Mike Griffis said a friend of the two men who were shot Friday night outside Patt’s Place told deputies they were ambushed, but Sunday night his investigators were considering all scenarios. Wrong time.”
Multiple types of shell casings were found at the scene, and Griffis said investigators will speak with more people over the next couple of days. There was an opportunity to justify the shooting, but that would be up to the jury, he said.
“There could be more charges on both sides, we just don’t know at this point,” Griffis said.
According to an arrest affidavit, deputies were dispatched to the bar in the 7400 block of Andrews Highway around 11:30 Friday night about a shooting. When they arrived, they found Aaron Ramos, 27, dead and a 25-year-old man critically injured.
The vice president of the Cossacks Motorcycle Club told deputies that a man named “Mento” was kicked out of the bar, and a few minutes later he was told he had been asked by a group of people causing trouble outside, according to the report.
The vice president told deputies that he and some club members went outside when authorities later said Nicholas James Thompson, 41, got out of a black car and fired about 15 rounds at the club members, the report said.
The vice president said he took cover, but quickly realized two club members had been shot, the report said. As the car sped away, the man said he saw “Mento” in the passenger seat, the report said.
During the ensuing investigation, Thompson called authorities and learned they were looking for him and that his car was in the garage with bullet holes, according to the report.
According to the Odessa Police Department, Thompson turned himself in to their crisis management and SWAT teams in the 7200 block of Cross B around 6:30 a.m. Saturday.
Thompson was booked into the Ector County Jail on a felony count of murder, and his bond was set at $350,000.
Griffis said investigators have been in contact with Mento and hope to interview him Monday.
Initially, investigators thought it might be an argument over a woman, but they don’t believe that, Griffis said.
“It (Thompson and Mento) may have been in the wrong bar at the wrong time,” but that remains unknown at this time, he said.
Griffis said Sunday night that he did not know the latest condition of the other person who was shot.
