MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – A 19-year-old woman from Tennessee is facing multiple charges, including first-degree murder, after she shot a toddler and her mother over a disagreement.

Police say 19-year-old Juanita Bruce has been charged with first-degree murder, four counts of attempted first-degree murder and four counts of using a firearm with intent to commit a felony.

Police responded to a shooting at New Chicago Park in Memphis on Friday just before 5 p.m. Witnesses say Bruce got into an argument with Cavius Askew, the mother of 1-year-old Carly Wright. Bruce knew the mother and daughter, according to police.

During the fight, Bruce pulls the gun from her purse and starts shooting. WMC reports that three victims, including Askew and her daughter, were injured.

Askew was found on the ground near a 2013 Nissan Altima with a gunshot wound to the leg. The daughter, who was in the backseat of the car, was hit in the chest and died at the scene, police said.

Another woman was grazing with a bullet in her right shoulder.

Askew was hospitalized in critical condition.

“We have to be better about conflict resolution. There’s no reason for a baby to die tonight because adults can’t fix each other,” said Sgt. Louise Brownlee, Memphis Police Public Information Officer.

Police say Bruce turned himself in within hours of the shooting.

In the affidavit, Bruce confessed to shooting Askew but said he did not mean to shoot Carly.

Two other children were in the Altima during the shooting, according to the affidavit. They didn’t hurt.
