The man police say fatally shot a family member at a North St. Paul home Tuesday acted after the victim stabbed two other relatives, according to the police department.

The fatal incident Tuesday in the 2300 block of Shoshone Road involved five family members inside the home, according to officials. It is unclear what led to the violence, and officials have yet to release a motive for the attack.

Police say they were called to the home for a report of an assault just after 12:30 p.m. Police said there were three victims at the scene: a man who had been shot, a man and a woman who had been stabbed.

While the stabbing victims were being treated for serious injuries, the shooter died on arrival at the hospital.

In Wednesday’s update, police say five related people were inside the home at the time of the attack. While the investigation is still ongoing, North St. Paul police say the man who was shot appears to have been stabbed.

Officials say the shooter was not identified as “trying to prevent further injury to family members.”

However, officials add that a “very active investigation” is still underway. They are not currently looking for other accused in the case.

Police say the case has not yet been filed with the Ramsey County Attorney’s Office and will decide whether to charge the shooter.

“This was a very violent, traumatic and tragic event for this family,” writes North St. Paul Police Chief Phil Babenroth. “I am saddened by the loss of life and our prayers go out to the survivors and families involved in this incident. I want to thank all of our North St. Paul police officers, the North St. Paul Fire Department, the Maplewood Police Department, the Maplewood Fire Department, the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office, the Oakdale Police, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and Lakeview Paramedics responded to the scene and immediately performed life-saving measures on all injured and quickly transported the injured. I would like to thank the dispatchers at Ramsey County ECC for their professionalism in dispatching and handling this incident.
