Gainesville, Fla. (WCJB) – Violence is on the rise in Lake City after a weekend of gunfire.
Last night three people were injured in a Tuesday night shooting at NW Early Street and NW Georgia Avenue. None of the injuries sustained were life threatening.
The shooting follows three shootings over the weekend. No one was injured as a result of the firing, but two vehicles were hit in the loose fire.
This is the 35th reported shooting in Lake City this year, according to police data. This is more than double the 17 cases reported last year.
Emma Christie is a Lake City resident attending Florida Gateway College. She says she fears violence will affect the town’s youth.
“Disappointed but not completely shocked,” Christie said. “It’s the kind of tone that affects us with everything that’s going on in certain areas, especially among young people. There is little intervention and no youth programs that I know of that help stop these things.
“There’s been bomb threats, there’s been shooting threats, there’s been people bringing weapons to school, whether it’s to settle a fight that started off campus or whatever,” Christie said. “It’s not getting better, it’s getting worse.”
Three people injured in Tuesday’s shooting returned home from the hospital on Wednesday, police confirmed.
