TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – A judge has ordered three teenage boys accused of shooting a casket at a funeral to be tried as adults. Three people were injured, but dozens more were caught by bullets.
Last year there was a shooting in Upton outside the River of Life Church.
“We don’t know why Petty focused on the shooting,” said Assistant Lucas County Prosecutor Andy Lastra.
The teenagers are charged with nine counts of felonious assault with a firearm specification attached to each count. Lastra says the evidence that the two suspects fired a dozen shots into the crowd was significant.
“Keith Hobbs and Kevin Jones ran behind houses across the street from the church to the intersection of Mansfield and Upton avenues, took up positions at the intersection and began shooting at cars down the street on Upton. Go,” said Lastra
He says people can’t back up.
“They were literally driving through a hail of bullets. “There was a six-year-old boy in the first car that was driven and he’s still terrified to this day,” Lastra said.
Investigators say the third suspect never pulled the trigger.
“There is no evidence that specifically says Lupe Hernandez was the shooter. If he hadn’t been in an SUV he stole from Oregon, taken to Start High School, taken both of these to church, but because he was directly involved, it probably wouldn’t have happened. The prosecutor said.
The three teenagers, ages 17 and 18, were released on $90,000 bond, placed under house arrest and ordered to wear ankle monitors. 13abc has reached out to their lawyers for comment but has yet to hear back.
