Dibrugarh: Assam Rifles and 166 Territorial Army in a joint operation arrested two suspected Adivasi militants from Dhaman Tinthengia village in Tingkhong area of ​​upper Dibrugarh district of Assam on Sunday night.

Police said they found a .22 caliber pistol and 4 rounds of live ammunition.

The arrested militants have been identified as Mileswar Kisan aka Sunil (38 years old) and Shampad Cheruwa aka Rahul (30 years old) resident of Salmari area.

He was handed over to the Tingkhong police station and booked under section 25 (1) (a) of the Arms Act.

Dibrugarh Additional SP (Central) Bitul Chetia said that the interrogation of the two persons is going on and added that they may have links with All Adivasi National Liberation Army (AANLA) or Maoists elements in the region.

AANLA, which was established in 2006, is estimated to have about 100 members from the tea community in the region. However, the armed cadre of the group is estimated to be no more than 20, said an official.

AANLA claims to be fighting to protect tribal culture and the rights of farm workers.

The outfit primarily targets large tea estates in Assam’s upper belt for extortion purposes.
