Columbia, Mo. (KMIZ)

Columbia police have arrested a man in connection with a double homicide in northeast Columbia Saturday night.

According to a Columbia Police Department social media post, police in Moberly arrested Cadillac Derrick, 35, on suspicion of two counts of second-degree murder and two counts of armed criminal action.

Police responded to reports of shots fired in the 1600 block of Boyd Lane on Saturday around 11 p.m.

When police arrived, they found one woman dead and another with a gunshot wound. Police later identified the victim as Leah Johanna Sanders, 22, of Columbia.

The injured woman, Laura Myers, 53, of Columbia, was transported by EMS to a local hospital, where she later died from her injuries.

He remained in the Boone County Jail Saturday without bond.

It was the fourth weekend in a row that Columbia police reported that one person was injured in a shooting.

Sanders’ uncle, Anthony Flowers, said Sunday morning that Sanders is Myers’ granddaughter.

Flowers said Myers would have gone to work Sunday afternoon if not for the shooting.

“I went to her place of work and told them the circumstances. She was a hard worker, a hard worker, a hard worker,” Flowers said.

Flowers also said that Sanders is a good mother.

“If she wasn’t working today, she’d probably be with her son because that’s what she lived for,” Flowers said.

Flowers implied that Sanders and Derrick were romantically involved. Flowers said both Sanders and Derrick have faced challenges and this time the events were too extreme.

“Now there’s a child left without a parent or a grandparent, and if there’s anything that could have prevented this, it’s just a tragedy,” Flowers said.
