Aizawl: The final date for the third round of border talks between Mizoram and Assam is still uncertain though Government of Assam has recently proposed a new date, a Mizoram home department official said on Thursday.
The talks, which were earlier scheduled for November 4, could not be held due to President Droupadi Murmu’s visit to Mizoram.
The Mizoram government had earlier urged the Assam government to postpone the talks until November 9-11.
Home officials said the Assam government had recently sent a proposal to hold border talks on November 17.
He said the Mizoram government has not yet given permission to the Assam government for the new date.
“The proposed new date is being discussed with the authorities. The interior minister will also discuss the matter with the chief minister,” said the interior official.
He said that it is not clear whether the border talks will be held or not on the date proposed by the Assam government.

The border dispute between the two neighboring states is a long-standing issue that has not yet been resolved.
In July last year, the police forces of the two states exchanged fire resulting in the death of six policemen and a civilian in Assam.
More than 60 people were also injured in the violent clash in the disputed area near Vairengte village in Mizoram on National Highway-306.
After the violence, the two governments held a meeting in August last year and agreed to maintain peace on the border and resolve the conflict through dialogue.

So far, both the governments have held two video meetings and video meetings five times.
Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga and his Assam counterpart Himanta Biswa Sarma also met twice in New Delhi in November last year and September this year to find an amicable solution to the complicated border dispute.
