ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) – Tributes continue to pour in for the three victims of the UVA shooting, DeSean Perry, LaVall Davis Jr. and Devin Chandler.
Everyone is grieving, but especially those close to them. Today, we heard from Perry’s high school coach at a press conference hosted by the family. In the past few days, we’ve also heard from UVA football coach Tim Elliott, and they’re three fine young men.
DeSean Perry was a 22-year-old linebacker and studio art major from Miami. His high school coach, Earl Sims Jr., was moved when he said DeSean was like his son, a gentle giant.
“He was certainly an athletic three-sport athlete with a high motor and a fiercely competitive nature, but he was kind, thoughtful and caring at his core,” Sims Jr. said.
LaVall Davis Jr. was a 20-year-old wide receiver from South Carolina. He is described as a person who loved deeply. Many say he has a chance to enter the NFL draft after this season.
“A big smile lights up a room. Most people would say it’s because he’s the tallest person in the room, but there’s just this presence. There’s a gentleness to him. But he’s passionate about what he believes in,” Elliott said.
Devin Chandler, a 20-year-old wide receiver transfer, was from North Carolina. Many remember him as someone who made people laugh and was a joy to be around.
“He was just what you wanted in a youngster at this level, but he was a big kid. Always smiling, loved to dance, loved to sing, loved to compete,” Elliott added.
The message is that when they are remembered, they will never be forgotten.
“The message is we’re going to celebrate their lives and the impact they’ve made so far,” Elliott explained.
We heard from Perry’s family attorney that they are in Charlottesville and that bringing their son home is their top priority right now.
We haven’t heard from the other families yet, but we’ll keep you updated as we do.
