Newly released videos show a Chicago police officer firing his weapon at a man who shot at police while walking in the Old Town neighborhood last month, then not rendering aid to the man.
Antonio Calmese Jr., 20, was shot at 5:05 a.m. Oct. 2 in the 400 block of West Blackhawk Street, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office. His death was a homicide as a result of multiple gunshot wounds.
Officers patrolling the area were flagged down by a man who said someone pointed a gun at them, police said.
Videos released Tuesday by the civilian Office of Police Accountability show Calmese walking down the street with a gun. They show the officer, Jarron Jefferson, chasing Calmese down an alley and instructing him several times to “drop it,” then saying, “You’re going to get shot over that gun.”
About a minute later, the officer deployed his Taser twice, but Calmese continued to walk away.
Then, before turning a corner into another alley, Calmese fired what appeared to be a single shot in the officer’s direction.
Jefferson ran into the corner and fired seven rounds into Calmese, followed by another four. He took cover behind the corner of a building, then fired seven more rounds at Calmese, who fell to the ground without seeing him fire back.
Jefferson Calmes, 34, was not assisted. A police report on the incident indicated that officers and firefighters assisted, but other officers who responded did not immediately render aid.
The videos show another officer tasing Kalmis about five minutes after the shooting. Firefighters arrived eight minutes after the shooting and started a rescue operation.
A handgun and shell casings that did not match the officer’s weapon were recovered near Calmes, police said.
Calmis was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, fire officials said.
Jefferson, who was not shot, was treated for injuries at the same hospital, fire officials said.
The chase lasted about 10 minutes, with Jefferson chasing Calmese around an apartment building, jumping fences and finally losing sight of him in a parking lot. When another officer arrived he found Calmese, at which point Jefferson said, “Get that mother—-.”
Jefferson got into another officer’s squad car and drove for about a minute until the two found Calmese again. Jefferson got out of the car moments before the shooting.
COPA continues to investigate the shooting. A summary report will be released after this is completed.
