New Delhi, Nov 4: Leaders of opposition parties in Assam have expressed concern over the recent violence in Shillong during a rally against unemployment and demanded exemplary punishment for the culprits.
“The recent violent attacks on the people of Shillong on October 28 which were widely reported in the media have caused great concern to the people of my state, especially in the Barak Valley,” Congress Deputy Leader of the Lok Sabha Gaurav Gogoi wrote in a letter. . Vice Principal Conrad K Sangma.
“We all know that people from other North-Eastern regions belonging to various communities including Assamese, Bengalis, Biharis and Gorkhas are working in Meghalaya,” Gogoi said, referring to attacks on such people. .
“The violence is disrupting the social harmony and brotherhood among the people of Northeast India,” he wrote.
Trinamool Congress (Rajya Sabha) MP Sushmita Dev alleged that last week’s violence was “state sponsored”.
“The chief minister cannot ignore the incidents of violence against non-tribals, especially Bengalis, so he should immediately order an inquiry,” Dev demanded.
Political leaders of other parties like the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) have already expressed concern over the incidents of violence against innocent people without any provocation.
Some Assam legislators have demanded an investigation by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) into the incidents and have sent a letter in this regard to the Chief Minister of Assam Himanta Biswa Sarma.
North Karimganj MP Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha recently met Meghalaya DGP LR Bishnoi and urged him to protect lives and property of innocent citizens.
