Now, Prafulla Kumar Mahanta is not an MLA and had no right to be there, a government official said.

The general administration department of the state government maintains the accommodation of the MPs.

A senior official said that the Assam secretariat is constructing new residential buildings for the accommodation of the MLAs and a notice has been sent to all the MLAs to vacate the old Assam type houses.

“By August 15, all the MPs have vacated their homes except former CM Mahanta who is not even an MP now he kept asking for seven more days in the last two and a half months,” he added.

Since 1985, when Prafulla Kumar Mahanta became the chief minister of Assam for the first time, he lived in a house in the assembly house building which was designed to join a third.

The official said the former minister was allowed to stay there on request. But since they did not vacate the houses after several notices, the department had to do the water and electricity connection there.

However, Prafulla Kumar Mahanta’s wife Joyasree Goswami Mahanta said that they have already shifted to a new house.
