A Roaring Spring woman has been charged with the shooting death of her husband after a lengthy investigation into a January 2021 incident in Newry.
Santana Elaine Larrett, 37, was arraigned Tuesday morning by Magisterial District Judge Paula M. Appeared before Aigner. Individual, simple assault and obstruction of justice.
She was released on $100,000 unsecured bail. A preliminary hearing before Aigner is set for Nov. 22.
The charges stem from the Jan. 31, 2021, shooting death of Larret’s husband.
Court documents state Freedom Township police were dispatched to 709 Shamrock Lane in Newry at 10:31 p.m. after Larett called 911 to say her husband was beating her. She then hangs up, but calls back to tell dispatch that her husband is being strangled, so she shoots him.
When police arrived, Larett was outside with a pistol and was taken into custody. No one else was found at the scene, but Conmag Nason Medical Center contacted Blair County 911 to report Larett’s husband was in the ER with a gunshot wound while officers secured the residence. Conemaugh was being treated at Conemaugh Nason and Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center in Johnstown for a single gunshot wound that entered his abdomen and affected his pelvic bone, police reported.
In an interview with police, Larret said her husband attacked her and shot her while she was on the floor.
The husband denied that he had suffocated Laret and the two quarreled after he said he wanted a divorce. He told police she took her SIM card from his phone, took his phone and credit cards, and forced him to give her a bear hug to get her credit cards back. Larret went into the closet, gave him a small container and reached back in for the gun before shooting himself in the stomach, he told police.
Larret said he ran outside, got into his rental car and drove off screaming for help before driving to the hospital.
During the investigation, police secured search warrants for the residence and sent clothing and other items to the police laboratory in Greensburg for testing.
Police said in court documents that Larett’s account of the shooting was inconsistent with evidence that the victim was on top of him when he pulled the trigger. However, police said the victim’s account of Larett standing when he was shot was consistent with the bullet’s downward trajectory.
On August 25, 2022, police received a lab report on the gun Jimenez allegedly used in the shooting. Various shock and drop tests failed to show the gun accidentally discharged, court documents state.
After receiving this report, the police sought an arrest warrant against Laret.
According to an affidavit of probable cause, Larret faces a hit-and-run charge after she climbed through the car’s center cage divider, grabbed the steering wheel and pulled him into the driver’s seat while her hands were secured in the back of a police cruiser. .
