GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Eight people were arrested after a drive-by shooting and police chase early Thursday morning.

The incident began shortly after 9 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 9, when the Kent County Sheriff’s Office received multiple 911 calls reporting shots fired on Campus Park Drive, south of 60th Street SE. Deputies found the house shot at the scene and no injuries were reported.

Preliminary information shows three vehicles were involved in the drive-by shooting, during which “more than 50 firearms were fired,” Kent County deputies said.

Deputies found the stolen vehicle parked on Campus Park Drive, and other vehicles used in the shooting were also reported stolen.

Following the incident, sheriff’s deputies notified surrounding police agencies to search for other stolen vehicles.

Around 3 a.m. Thursday, the Grand Rapids Police Department responded to a report of stolen vehicles in the area of ​​Normandy Drive SE and Village Drive SE. These vehicles fit the description of the suspect vehicles involved in the Gaines Township shooting. At this time, the Kent County Sheriff’s Office Technical Services Unit was activated and additional Grand Rapids Police resources responded.

Upon arrival, GRPD officers found both vehicles occupied. Upon making contact with the suspects, both vehicles intentionally crashed into a Grand Rapids police cruiser while attempting to flee.

A vehicle left the scene and police began a search. Four people in another vehicle were taken into custody.

The vehicle left the scene and crashed into the porch of a home near Fulton Street and Valley Avenue NW. The two suspects in that vehicle fled on foot after the crash and were located by a police tracking dog. Two other suspects who were in the crashed vehicle stayed inside and were arrested.

After being treated for minor injuries in the crash, the four suspects who were being chased by police were arrested and taken into the custody of sheriff’s deputies.

Multiple firearms and evidence of additional crimes were recovered during the arrest.
