Hillary Clinton wants former President Donald Trump to pay more than $1 million in legal fees after a judge threw out her racketeering lawsuit against him in September.
Lawyers for the former Democratic presidential candidate filed a motion in federal court on Monday asking the court to impose sanctions on Trump, citing the lawsuit as saying Clinton and others involved in the plot to undermine her 2016 campaign and allegations of Russian involvement were “politically motivated.”
“No reasonable attorney would ever drop this case, let alone continue to prosecute it after multiple motions by the Defendants to dismiss showing its serious and irreparable flaws,” Clinton’s lawyers wrote, according to the Hill.
Clinton’s legal team is asking Trump for $1.06 million in legal fees incurred by all the defendants named in her civil suit.
The former president filed a civil lawsuit in March, accusing Clinton, the Democratic National Committee, White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan, former British spy Christopher Steele, among others, of the conspiracy to derail his 2016 presidential campaign and allegations of Russian involvement. Trump said in documents that he suffered about $24 million in losses due to reports of collusion between his presidential campaign and Russia.
U.S. District Judge Donald Middlebrooks, who was appointed by former President Bill Clinton in 1997, threw out the lawsuit in September, citing “weakness in the plaintiff’s argument.” petition.”
Trump’s legal team has asked the 11th Circuit to dismiss the lawsuit.
Trump attorney Alina Habba alleged that Clinton had political reasons for filing the motion to seek sanctions.
“This motion, which is well submitted one week before the election day, is nothing more than an attempt to make a political point,” Habba told the Hill. “This motion is unnecessary, as our client’s case will soon be reviewed by the Eleventh Circuit. We oppose this motion and believe that the Court will find this fraud.”
