DHEMAJI, 6 November: Noted Arunachali writer and Padma Shri awardee Yeshe Dorjee Thongchi said that “the people of Arunachali dealing with the Assamese language play a major role in the development of Assamese culture.”
Thongchi was speaking at an interactive session at the Assam Book Fair, organized by the Assam Prashasan Parishad, here on Sunday.
Thongchi recalled Arunachal’s border with Assam and said “the people of the state took formal education in the Assamese language before the rule of NEFA.”
“Later, demarcation of NE states of Assam has adversely affected the use of Assamese language in Arunachal Pradesh and other NE states,” he added.
Thongchi said that many Arunachali writers, writers, poets and storytellers “are still using Assamese literature to focus their literary career,” and requested the Assam Prashasan Parishad and Asom Sahitya Sabha activists to “maintain their cooperation with the writers of the neighboring state and a large section of the Arunachalis adopt the Assamese language as their medium.”
The program on the third day of the 10-day fair featured an interactive session with Arunachal writers involved in Assamese literature, in collaboration with the Arunachal Pradesh Literary Association.
Thongchi was accompanied by Kaling Borang, Ato Lego, Mading Pertin, Batem Pertin and Henkar Rokom Badu. They interacted with writers, poets, writers and university students.
The 10-day book fair was inaugurated by Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu on November 4, in the presence of Assam Prashasan Parishad and Asom Sahitya Sabha functionaries and other dignitaries.
Noted Assamese author and writer Jayanta Madhab Bora and journalist Mukul Pathak recalled the contribution of Arunachali writers to Assamese literature.
