Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge was elected as the Congress president after polling nearly 8,000 votes in the presidential election. Kharge defeated Shashi Tharoor to become the first non-Gandhi to hold the party’s top post.
Shashi Tharoor, who received nearly 1,100 votes, admitted defeat moments after the announcement and said that “the revival of our party has truly begun today”.
Around 9,500 party delegates voted in the election. Kharge got 7,897 votes while Tharoor got 1,072 votes. Tharoor, from the beginning, claimed that the election was one-sided and there was no room for equality. However, he also refused to withdraw his nomination and continue the race.
