Brittney Griner’s legal team confirmed Thursday that the WNBA star The two-time Olympic gold medalist was transferred to a penal colony in the Mordovia region almost two weeks after he made his statement.
Griner met with his legal team earlier this week and is said to be “doing as well as can be expected,” Maria Blagovina and Alexander Boykov said in a statement.

“We can confirm that Brittney started serving her sentence at IK-2 in Mordovia. We visited her this week. Brittney is doing as well as can be expected and trying to stay active he adapts to a new environment,” said the story.

A source told Reuters Thursday that Griner was taken to the IK-2 Women’s Penal Colony in Yavas, about 300 miles outside Moscow and in the same region. American Paul Whelan is being held.

“I can confirm that our Russian legal team has seen Brittney at the IK-2 penal colony in Mordovia,” Griner’s agent, Lindsay Colas, said separately.
“Even though he’s alone, almost nine months in prison and separated from his loved ones, he’s trying to stay strong.”

Washington has yet to receive formal notification of Griner’s transfer, State Department deputy spokesman Vedant Patel said Wednesday. The U.S. office has not been able to speak to Griner since he moved, he said.
