CHICAGO (CBS) — A 14-year-old boy was shot outside a polling station in Brighton Park as thousands of people headed to the polls to vote in Tuesday’s general election.

Just before 5 p.m. Tuesday, he was standing on the sidewalk in the 4400 block of South Archer Avenue when someone shot him in the left leg, police said. The child was admitted to the hospital in good condition.

We spoke to multiple witnesses – none of whom wanted to speak to us on camera because they feared retribution. We don’t know who shot the boy or why, but we do know that the shooter was caught on surveillance video.

Sources said the boy was on election day duty when the shooting took place. Too young to vote himself, he was collecting signatures at his school in an effort to get others to vote.

Surveillance cameras have been installed all around the incident site.

Video from across the street shows the boy standing behind a white car shortly before the shooting. The moment the car leaves, the boy is seen on the ground.

It’s unclear if the car is connected to the shooting.

Witnesses told CBS 2’s Sabrina France that friends rushed to help him after he was shot in the leg. They picked him up before laying him back down on the sidewalk in front of a few stores.

Witnesses called 911.

Crowded by witnesses, the boy sat there waiting for an ambulance to arrive in rush hour traffic. A few minutes later paramedics showed up to take him to hospital and the police also rushed to the scene.

As of Wednesday evening, a bullet hole remained in a saloon adjacent to the polling station.

The boy remained at Stroger Hospital in Cook County late Wednesday. He has a long road to recovery but is expected to survive.

No one was in custody Wednesday afternoon.
