MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – The woman accused of pulling the trigger on a dispute that left a toddler dead and a mother seriously injured is in custody and will appear before a judge Monday morning.

A witness who was there when it all happened described the tragic outcome to Action News 5.

Celeste, a New Chicago resident, said there were so many people in the New Chicago park on Friday evening that suddenly there was a commotion.

Memphis police say 19-year-old Juanita Bruce got into an argument with the toddler’s mother, Cavius Askew, at the park.

Celeste said she went to the fight to see what was going on when she saw Bruce pull out his gun.

She begged him to stop, but by then it was too late.

“It’s shot after shot, you know?” Celeste said.

Police say Askew was found on the ground near a 2013 Nissan Altima with a gunshot wound to the leg.

A bullet grazed another woman’s upper right shoulder.

One-year-old Carly Wright was found in the back seat of her mother’s car with a wound to the chest, shot by a stray bullet.

According to the police report, Bruce admitted to intentionally shooting Askew and seriously injuring him after a fight broke out.

But Bruce told police he didn’t mean to shoot the baby.

“Honestly, I’m not sure how the baby got hit,” Celeste said. “It’s just a mistake you’ll pay for forever.”

Two other children were in the car during the shooting and were not injured, according to the affidavit.

Police say Bruce left the scene in his car but turned himself in hours later.

She is charged with one count of first-degree murder, four counts of attempted first-degree murder and four counts of using a firearm with intent to commit a felony.

Tragically, Carly is just one of many children in the city of Memphis who have died in violence this year.

According to Memphis police, the number is 26.

For Celeste, it’s 26 more.

“It’s not something I even want to remember,” she said. “I hate that it even happened. I hate that we were here to see it, witness it, or look at it. Before, after effect. I hate it all. I hate everyone. “

Bruce is scheduled to appear in court at 9 a.m. Monday

No bond has been set.
