Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday urged the youth of the state to focus on processing and packaging agricultural produce and goods.
He said that the various products that come out of the region are in great demand all over the world and proper processing and packaging will ensure that this product will continue to be supported.
Sarma was speaking after inaugurating a 5,000 metric tonne cold storage facility at Chaygaon and a vegetable processing facility at the Satabari food garden, both under Kamrup district.
The cold storage facility was built by the Assam State Agriculture Marketing Board at 24.75 crore.
The fruit processing unit was built at a cost of Rs 2.89 crore and is the first of its kind in the state.
The minister pointed out that products such as ginger, pepper, lemon, joha rice, etc. are in great demand in the domestic and international markets.
He insisted that farmers of these products will be able to reap the value of their produce if it is pre-processed and packaged.
He urged farmers, especially the youth to take advantage of the government’s incentives in this sector.
Sarma said the annual export of agricultural produce has been around Rs 200 crore in the last two years and expressed confidence that this figure could easily cross Rs 1,000-crore in a few years.
