Guwahati: The Assam Congress ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ reached the state’s largest city Guwahati on Thursday, with the opposition Rajor Dal also joining the long march.
All India Congress General Secretary Jitendra Singh, Congress state presidents of Assam, Sikkim and Manipur, former Arunachal Pradesh CM Nabam Tuki and other leaders took part in an 8-km march through the streets of the city, party spokesperson Manjit Mahanta said.
“More than 500 people joined the march on Thursday,” he said.
The Congress, the main opposition party in Assam, started the ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ from Dhubri district on November 1 and planned to cover a distance of 834 km in 70 days.
In addition to the 3,570-km Kanyakumari to Kashmir yatra, the Congress is organizing several sub-majors in states where the main yatra will not pass.
Congress spokesperson said Rajor Dal delegates joined the rally in the city and extended their support to the program.
“Rajor Dal is supporting our yatra to stop BJP’s expansionist designs,” he said.
The Congress spokesperson said that other opposition parties in the state and prominent citizens will join the rally on Friday, which was earlier attended by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in Jalukbari on Wednesday.
The tour will end in Sadiya in the east of the region, the spokesman added.
