Broken promises: Assam government’s decision to scrap 8,000 educational institutions widely condemned
Sectarian and communal organizations have widely condemned the proud decision announced by Assam Chief Minister Himanto Biswas Sarma even though it was taken six months later.
The state government’s election promise was to provide employment to 1 lakh unemployed youth of Assam but in reality the Assam government seems to be busy doing the opposite.
The Assam State Primary School Teachers’ Association (ASPTA) has reacted strongly and critically to the Assam government’s decision to cancel the posts of 8,000 primary school teachers claiming that the posts are vacant. On November 7, 2022, Dr Bijaya Choudhary, the Secretary of the Government of Assam officially announced the decision taken by the Cabinet of Assam on May 26, 2020.
ASPTA General Secretary, Ratul Goswami who reacted strongly to the media said, “Assam needs more teachers in the government sector, as around 3,000 government-run primary schools still have one or two teacher.(permanent) positions instead of eliminating regular positions altogether?
A recent survey conducted by the Assam State Primary Teachers Association (ASPTA) in March 2022 revealed surprisingly, that there are 1,664 primary schools in the state which are functioning in one room and a total of 3,716 schools are running. only one teacher per region. The survey covered 33,829 primary schools in 51 departments in 32 districts of the state. In addition, nearly 10,000 primary schools do not have any electricity, thousands of schools in Assam dint have sanitation facilities, revealed the report.
After the announcement by the education secretary, the minister of state for education in Assam Ranoj Pegu also confirmed the decision and cited vague reasons for motivation. He said these positions were eliminated to “avoid duplication and fiscal neutrality.”

The famous Assamese scholar and sociologist Dr. Hiren Gohain told Sabrangindia, “Our unemployed youth are hopeful that they will get jobs, which means that the government should increase the posts. But it is unfortunate that, on the contrary, the government wants to weaken the education system. , such decisions will have a great impact on the common people, and this will weaken the public education institution, and then people will have to go to private education, which is a dangerous path like we know.
This decision of the Assam government has provoked a reaction of anger and criticism from Assamese quarters. However, it is unfortunate that the political opposition in the region has not taken any stand on this matter, and has not started any agitation or protest.
However the Students Federation of India (SFI) and DYFI not only issued statements but also planned to start an agitation. SFI representative, Sangita Das and DYFI Assam state secretary Ritu Ranjan Das jointly issued a press release. The government has decided to hit the future of educated youth in the state with this decision, said the statement as thousands of TET candidates hope for professional jobs. The press release also stated that the economic condition of the state is in serious trouble as a result of high expenses, and unplanned and unproductive sectors. This is what led the BJP government in the state to abolish the permanent posts of teachers. DYFI and SFI have announced that they will start a protest soon if the BJP-led Assam government does not stop the decision to boycott education and work.
Both organizations have also requested TET candidates, teachers and common sense people to protest against the stubborn decision of the government.
Meanwhile, Abul Kalam Azad, Education Secretary of Assam Minority Students’ Union (AAMSU) told Sabrangindia, “The government has taken a decision to reduce the deficit, it is very unfortunate that the government is ruining it. We at AAMSU strongly condemn the permanent positions she had.
He also added, “When most of the schools are with a single teacher and this unilateral decision is not acceptable.” AAMSU demanded a review of this decision.
On the other hand, Brojogopal Sarkar, General Secretary of Bengal Youth Federation of BTR (ABBYSF) told Sabrangindia, “We strongly condemn this stupid decision. This is another step against the business side of all sectors, this time. by destroying the public education system.” He also said that, “basically it will affect the poor rural people of Assam.” 
He added, “It is a clear conspiracy to destroy Bengali, Bodo, Assamese and other spoken languages.”
The All Assam Students Union (AASU) has claimed that the BJP government in Assam has announced the killing of moderate institutions in the state.
Since teachers’ unions and youth have come together to express opposition, and the unions have also voiced their protest, it will be seen whether the Assam government will comply with the condemnation and public anger.
