Kansas City Chiefs safety Juan Thornhill will wear a special pair of custom cleats in the team’s game against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday to honor the victims of the tragic shooting at the University of Virginia.
Thornhill played college football at UVA and is a native of Altavista, Virginia. He joined the Chiefs in 2019.
UVA football players LaVall Davis Jr., DeSean Perry and Devin Chandler were shot at by a UVA student bus returning to the field Sunday after a field trip to Washington, D.C. Two other people were injured in the shooting – including another football player, Mike Hollins.
“RIP Young Kings 💔,” Thornhill posted on his Instagram feed after news of the shooting.
The cleats he plans to wear as a tribute are orange and white with the numbers 1, 15 and 41 painted on them. It was the jersey numbers of the slain players.
The game will kick off at 8:20 PM ET at Sophie Stadium in California.
