NONGSTOIN, November 3: An MGNREGA road project from Noapara village to Balwa Wari waterfalls, which was reportedly being implemented by the Assam government, on Thursday came to a standstill following strong opposition from local residents.
According to information sources, the construction of this road was carried out by the Cassam Government with the help of the Cassam Police and its supporters.
Angered by the development, villagers of Noapara village bordering Assam on Thursday protested against the move.
After getting the information, the Meghalaya Police from Langpih AD camp rushed to the spot only to find the cutting work going on in Noapara village. In the same way, however, the intervention of the Circle Officer of Boko Dibas Bordoloi was stopped.
Protesters in Meghalaya and Assam initially did not want to face police bail. However, the arrival of the leaders of the two regional governments and a subsequent meeting put an end to the noise.
The engineers also arrived at the site with the officials to answer the questions of the residents of Noapara.
During the meeting, it was decided that the public should have a meeting to decide on the future of the construction work, and that they should submit the decision to the relevant deputy governors.
The matter was resolved amicably, and it was decided to hold a meeting at the Dorbar in Noapara village with the cooperation of the two supporters of Meghalaya and Assam, in the presence of the police and civil authorities of the two states.
