Alexandria, La. (KALB) – Louisiana State Police have released new details related to a deputy-involved shooting in Alexandria on Sunday, Nov. 6. Derrick J., of Alexandria, in a shooting involving a Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office deputy. resulted in the death of Kitling (45).
According to LSP’s investigation, an RPSO deputy conducted a traffic stop with Kittling on 7th Street near Broadway Avenue. This led to a fight between the two, which resulted in Kittling gaining control of the deputy’s Taser, LSP said. As their struggle continued, the deputy fired his weapon, striking Kittling. He was taken to the hospital for treatment but eventually died.
The investigation is ongoing and additional information will be released in coordination with the Rapides Parish District Attorney’s Office at the appropriate time. LSP remains the lead investigative agency in this shooting. Kittling is the brother of LSP Lt. Col. Kenny VanBuren. However, LSP said VanBuren will not be involved at any level of the investigation.
Rapides Parish Sheriff Mark Wood released this statement about the shooting:
“First, I want to pray for our communities for everyone involved in the deputy-involved shooting that we had yesterday. This tragic event will forever affect the lives of two families. Second, I am asking for the patience of our community as Colonel Lamar Davis and investigators with the Louisiana State Police conduct a full and thorough investigation into this incident. We had a deputy involved shooting before, but as it was a fatality, I called Colonel Davis and asked for his assistance. I am confident in their ability to conduct a fair and impartial investigation following the evidence wherever it leads. Again, please keep everyone involved in your prayers.
