Yakima County prosecutors have charged a Yakima man with first-degree assault in the shooting death of a man he was dating his ex-girlfriend.
Ryan Cole Slavens is charged with two counts of reckless endangerment and one count of gross misdemeanor in connection with the Nov. 4 incident.
Prosecutors are also seeking a firearms enhancement to the assault charge, which carries an additional five years in prison if Slavens is convicted.
A case has been registered against him in a case of shooting and injuring a person.
Police were called to the 7900 block of West Knob Hill Boulevard on Nov. 4 at 3:15 p.m. for a man who had been shot. Officers found a 23-year-old man in the street near the South 80th Avenue intersection with a gunshot wound to the abdomen, according to court documents.
Slavens, who has a concealed pistol license, was at the scene and dropped the gun and knelt on the ground with his hands to his head when police arrived, court documents said.
A woman in the victim’s car told police that Slavens was her ex-boyfriend and that Slavens was the victim’s friend until she and the victim started dating, according to court documents.
The pair had just left the Dairy Queen on West Knob Hill Boulevard when they spotted Slavens in his pickup truck on South 72nd Avenue, court records say. When the truck stopped in the middle of the road, they drove through the Meadowbrook Mall parking lot to overtake the slaves. But as they turned back onto West Knob Hill Boulevard, Slavens pulled up behind them and slammed into the back of the victim’s Toyota Matrix as it stopped at the intersection of South 80th Avenue, court documents say.
The victim got out of his car and hit the driver’s window of Slavens’ truck, the woman and other witnesses said, and Slavens shot the man who stumbled into his car, according to court documents.
Witnesses, including a passenger in Slavens’ truck, said the victim, who had a gun in his jacket pocket, had nothing in his hand, the affidavit said.
Slavens is being held in the Yakima County Jail in lieu of $150,000 bail. Slavens was awaiting trial on a third-degree malicious mischief charge in Sela Municipal Court at the time of the shooting, court records show.
In that incident, Slavens backed up into the vehicle of a man accused of having sex with his girlfriend, backed up his pickup, smeared the tires with gravel and damaged the other man’s car, according to a YPD affidavit.
