HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) – The Huntington City Council voted Monday night on a resolution to declare Premier Pub and Grill a public nuisance and “abate” or eliminate the business.
Council members passed the resolution unanimously.
The vote comes after an employee of a neighboring restaurant was killed in a shooting outside the bar on November 4. In a formal complaint filed Nov. 10 in Cabell County Circuit Court, the city said four people had been shot near the bar in the past eight months.
Charges raised in shooting of restaurant employee
At Monday’s council meeting, City Attorney Scott Damron explained to members why he believes the bar should be declared a public nuisance. Damron pointed to multiple shootings, including the latest and fatal shooting. He also raised concerns about the bar’s proximity to Marshall University’s campus, claiming it could put students at risk.
Joe Bryan was a worker inside DP Dow who was hit by a stray bullet and later died. His aunt was present to attend the public hearing portion of Monday’s council meeting. She said the owner of the bar tried to contact her and her family, but she did not want to talk to the owner.
“I feel like if you can’t control the kind of visuals a bar puts out, that’s not the business you want to be in,” she said.
Over the weekend, the bar surrendered its liquor license. West Virginia Alcohol Beverage Control Administration Commissioner Fred Wootton announced that Premier Pub and Grill had surrendered that license.
